The Montezuma Bravettes JV season began last week with games against Twin Cedars and Pella Christian.
In a season where the JV roster is primarily freshmen without high school experience, the speed of the game proved to be a bit of a challenge in game one as the turnover bug bit the Bravettes.
Although the team never lacked hustle and grit, scoring was tough to come by, shooting 8-29 from the field with 20 possessions lost to turnovers.
Despite that difficulty offensively, the Bravettes hung tough with solid defense and showed strong promise in the rebounding category.
Kallie Robison led the team with 8 points and 5 rebounds, while Madison Van Zee and Alivia Cline also chipped in four rebounds each. The Bravettes fell to Twin Cedars 17-35.
In the next game, the Bravettes hosted Pella Christian prior to the varsity girls’ opener. Montezuma came out with a strong first half, leading 16-6 at halftime, led by freshman Jadyn Sharer with 13 points, including 3 3-pointers.
In the second half, points were tough to come by, and Pella Christian hit two 3-pointers within the last minute to send the game to overtime. In overtime, Pella Christian hit one shot more than the Bravettes, coming away with a 30-27 victory.
Alivia Cline scored 8 points to go along with Sharer’s first half totals. The Bravettes were strong on the rebounds again, with Korrinn Kehoe grabbing 7 rebounds in one half of play, Kallie Robison with 7 rebounds, and Laila Kercheval with 6.
The Bravettes fell to 0-2 in the start of the season and face a tough Sigourney team on Monday, Nov. 30 at home.
