Braves ‘pressurize’ Colfax-Mingo, 50-20

COLFAX – With conference records of 8-5 for Montezuma and 3-8 for Colfax-Mingo, the Braves knew they might have to work to beat the Tigerhawks on their home court.

And work Montezuma did, with a pressuring defense and a run-out offense keeping the heat on the home team throughout a 50-20 win by the Braves Friday night, Jan. 26.

I am very proud of our growth on the defensive end the last few weeks,” said Montezuma Coach Derrick Dengler.

After Colfax-Mingo hit a trey for an early 3-0 lead, Montezuma scored the last 13 points of the first quarter, and 19 of 21 total points in the second. It was 32-5 at halftime.

Montezuma defenders contested every shot Colfax-Mingo took. The Braves crashed the defensive board and after an outlet to the wings, they were off to the races.

The Braves saw continued development by Kohen Holland, who tied Brady Boulton for game scoring honors with 17 points. Holland was 8-for-11 from the field, and added five rebounds.

We mentioned Boulton’s 17, and Garrett Watts added 11, on four-for-six shooting. Fhe also had a team-high 9 rebounds and dished four assists.

In their half-court sets, the Braves penetrated and moved well without the ball, resulting in layups or open looks.

We didn’t shoot well, but still controlled the game well,” Dengler said.

The Braves held Colfax-Mingo to .156 field goal shooting.

Montezuma led 48-9 through three quarters.

The Braves lifted their records to 10-6 overall and 9-5 in SICL play.

Colfax-Mingo is 4-11 and 3-9.

UP NEXT – The Braves and Bravettes go on the road to Moravia on Monday, Jan. 29.
