
MONROE – Montezuma outscored PCM 5-0 in the last minute of play and emerged with a 48-39 win over PCM in a matchup of girls basketball teams with good records on Thursday evening, Jan. 4.
Montezuma, ranked 15th in this week’s Class 1A poll, led 43-39 with just 60 seconds left to play.
“Our girls showed great grit and determination,” Coach Janel Burgess said.
The Bravettes led 20-16 at halftime, after trailing 10-6 after one quarter.
Montezuma pushed its lead out to 36-30 through three periods, then finished with a 12-9 fourth quarter.
“We were not perfect, but we sure did establish a great defensive presence early. And we shared the ball extremely well,” Burgess said.

The Bravettes put three girls into double figures, led by post Shiressa Wetering, who scored 16 points on six-for-nine shooting from the field and four-for-four from the line.
Ellen Cook had 10 and so did vivian Cook. Claire Erselius and Jadyn Sharer each chipped in with 6.
The Bravettes had a 28-20 lead in rebounds.
Izzy Roorda didn’t score, but came through big-time in other areas, such as rebounds (a team-high 9), and steals, with 5.
The Bravettes didn’t shoot so well, (just .347 from the field), but limited the Mustangs to .312.
The win lifted the Bravettes to 8-2 overall.
PCM dropped to 7-4.
Montezuma was favored by less than half a point in the BCMoore Rankings.
“Each week ahead of us will provide new challenges,” Burgess said. “We just have to stay focused on US…and keep growing!
