SULLY – To be the best, you’ve got to play the best.

The Class 1A Bravettes took on one of the best in the area in their jamboree experience Monday evening, Nov. 13.

Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, which went 24-1 as a Class 2A team last season, had something left from that great run. As in four starters!

The Rockets outscored Montezuma 37-22 in one half of basketball.

Jamboree results don’t count as wins or losses.

The biggest difference was in shooting. Sharp passing contributed to that. EBF shot .630 from the field, to Montezuma’s .400.

The Bravettes assisted just three of their 10 baskets.

Junior guard Ellen Cook had a solid half for the Bravettes, leading scoring with 11 points, including four-for-eight field goal shooting, which included three-for-five from behind the three-point arc.

Shiressa Wetering scored eight points on four-for-five field goal shooting. She also had three rebounds.

Montezuma was three-for-eleven from three-point range.

The Bravettes open their regular season Friday night at home against another larger school, Vinton-Shellsburg. That will be a varsity-only game, with a 6 p.m. starting time.
