DES MOINES – It’s said that we remember moments, not entire events.

Brett Plants, Montezuma’s 190-pound entry in the Class 1A state wrestling tournaments, should have made plenty of memories in his Thursday, Feb. 15 day at Wells Fargo Arena.

Brett competed in two bouts on the mat. He didn’t win either, but did receive a bye to advance to another round in the consolation bracket.

Along the way, he just took it all in: The noise, the atmosphere. . .just being there.

Brett is a junior. He plans to return next year, and stay in the hunt longer.

Plants was paired against Tanner Thurn of East Buchanan in the championship round.

Thurn scored an 11-5 decision.

Plants scored two of his points on a takedown with 1:07 left in the first period.

He got an escape point with 15 seconds left in the second period.

Then, Brett got a second takedown with just 19 seconds left in the match.

Moving into the consolation bracket, Plants received his bye before taking on Drew Lansing of Wapsie Valley in the next round.

Lansing was in control and scored a 14-3 decision.

Plants won more than 30 matches this season. Usually, the higher you go in weight class, the harder it is to pile up victories.

Brett’s younger brother, Braxton, didn’t qualify for state, but also racked up more than 30 wins, most at 215 pounds.

The boys’ dad, Mike Plants, is an assistant varsity coach for Montezuma.

Their mother, Kelly, takes videos at Montezuma matches.
