Brett Plants is state tourney-bound!

Brett Plants has his hand raised in victory as the champ at 190 pounds in the Class 1A District meet.

TRURO – Montezuma junior wrestler Brett Plants won the Class 1A district championship at 190 pounds, and is headed for the State Wrestling Tournament in Des Moines Feb. 14-17.

No other Braves qualified for state, but 215-pounder Braxton Plants made the medals stand with his fourth-place finish.

In order to qualify for state, wrestlers had to place first or second in their weight class at district. The sectional level has been eliminated this year because 24 wrestlers qualify for state at each weight level.

Brett Plants had a first round bye during the district meet, held Saturday afternoon, Feb. 10.

He scored a technical fall in 5:23 over Conner Rausch of Southeast Warren in the semifinals.

In the championship match, Plants pinned Cameron Nicoletto of Moravia in 4:27.

Other Braves who competed were Conner Smith at 126 pounds, Beau Young at 132, Evan Haughey at 165, and Isaac Wedgewood at 285.

As a team, Montezuma was 10th of 11 schools represented with 35.5 points.
