EDDYVILLE – You can go back in time!
No, really, they did it in Eddyville on Monday, April 15. End-of-the world storms were forecast across Iowa for Tuesday, so officials started phone calls and e-mails asking if the teams could come on Monday instead for the Girls Rocket Relays.
Five teams said ‘yes’ and Bravettes Coach Megan Carlson was glad.
“The weather was amazing,” she said.
“Several girls were missing for State FFA, but we were able to run a lot of girls in different events and improve in many areas,” the coach said.
“Chloe Snook led the charge, winning three of her four events and finishing second in another,” Carlson said. “She came away with two lifetime-bests.”
Snook won the 100, 200 and 400, and placed second in the long jump.
The Bravettes won the 100-meter hurdle shuttle. Runners were Sam Bos, Laila Kercheval, Ashlee Eilander and Hayley Burnett.
Montezuma won the 4×100 with Taylor Wilcox, Kam Schmidt, Lily Ferry and Kami Mathes.
The Bravettes took the 4×400 with Mathes, Laila Kercheval, Schmidt and Carrie-Ann Maxwell.
North Mahaska beat Montezuma 162 to 103 for the team title.
“Overall, the Bravettes placed in every event they competed in except one!” Carlson said.
“We must keep encouraging all the girls to try new events and ‘steal’ even more points in meets,” the coach said.
“Our throwers had some season- and lifetime-bests that allowed them to place well,” Carlson said.
“We are proud of how the girls competed and we saw some strong finishes from several athletes, fighting at the fnish line to get everything they could. Some great grit performances came from Kam Schmidt, Kami Mathes, Taylor Wilcox and Lily Ferry,” said the coach.
“All of the girls are getting after it and we hope to keep improving as the season is going very fast at this point,” Carlson said.
