LEGRAND – The Braves found the weather and the competition from larger schools to their liking, and responded with improved performances at the Boys Mustang Relays on Monday, April 8,

We had some great team and individual performances throughout the night,” said Montezuma Coach John Beck.

It all added up to a seventh-place finish in a 12-school field, even though Montezuma performed without a top scorer in Garrett Watts, who was away on a planned absence.

As it was, the Braves scored well with what is becoming a solid nucleus of sprinters, hurdlers and jumpers.

Jayden Ross, left, in a sprint to the finish at East Marshall.

Our throwers all had personal records in at least of their events,” Beck said. “Beau Young set personal records in the shot put and discus, while Briar Simpson PR’d in the shot.”

Owen DesRochers had a nice start to his throwing career as well.”

In the long jump, our two guys jumped well and in the high

jump, our guys showed some good technique and are improving,” Beck said.

The guys came out to compete and many of them ran season-best or career-best times,” the coach said.

In individual events, Beck said the Braves had personal best in these events:

Kenny Criswell – 100.

David Rose – 200.

Evan Haughey – 400.

Kohen Holland – 800.

Cael Cheney – 3,200.

Bryson Stockman – 400 lows.

Damien Knox – 110 highs.

Beck said, “we dropped some times in a few relays while we competed well in others. We can continue to work on blocks and handoffs to continue to improve these events.”

Season-best times were posted by the Braves in the 4×100, 4×200, 4×800 and the distance medley.

Meanwhile I saw some great individual performances within the other races and we had many personal record splits,” Beck said.

This meet is a good one to get a lot of guys into events. The boys took the challenge of competing against some bigger schools and ran with it,” the coach said. “I am excited to see them do the same thing on Friday night against similar competition.”

The Braves were headed to Aplington-Parkersburg for a meet on Friday, April 12.
