Girls battle bigger schools and cold winds

LEGRAND – When you compete in the East Marshall Girls Invitational, you learn to:

  • Compete hard, in order to post good times and distances against girls from larger schools and;
  • Find ways to keep warm between events. The field sits atop a hill and when the wind blows after sundown, it’s COLD!

The Bravettes ran hard, placed in the top 10 in five events, and managed to put up 20 points on Thursday evening, April 11.

With more than 10 larger schools (out of 14 total) we knew that scoring points would be hard, but we were able to beat three other teams, which was great to see!” said Montezuma Coach Megan Carlson.

Chloe Snook grabbed a third-place finish in the 100-meter dash, with a season-best of 13.50 seconds.

The Bravettes got a fourth-place run in the 4×100 from Lilly Ferry, Sydnee Burgess, Vivian Cook and Snook.

Snook was sixth in the 400-meter dash.

Montezuma’s sprint medley team placed seventh. Runers will Ferry, Vivian Cook, Burgess and Snook.

The Bravettes got a seventh in the distance medley from Kam Schmidt, Burgess, Kami Mathes and Ellen Cook.

East Marshall always runs a big meet, but allows for teams to have several JV entries,” Carlson said.

That gave a lot of girls chances to run against competition.

Spring is always busy and now the girls are having dance recitals and preparing for State FFA,” Carlson said. “But we know the season will go fast from this point. We are excited to work with some different combinations and enter the championship portion of the season,” Carlson said.

I am proud of how the girls cheer for each other. We even came away with a few personal bests despite the very windy conditions.”
