JH 8 ‘A’ boys drop overtime thriller

By Coach John Beck

SIGOURNEY – Montezuma’s junior high boys ‘A’ basketball team dropped a 48-43 overtime game to Sigourney on Tuesday, Jan. 28.

While the game didn’t end up in our favor, there was no lack of effort.

We got up early and played really well in the 1st quarter and carried that into the 2nd. We struggled a bit in the 3rd quarter, but made a run late in the 4th to tie it up.

We just ran out of gas in overtime.

Scoring included Max Anderson 10, Jack Erselius 9, Garrett Watts 8, Tod Geiger 8, Houston Van Roekel 5, Cruz DeJong 2 and Carter Michalek 1.

Max Anderson hit 2 buzzer-beaters from 3-point land at the end of the 2nd and 3rd quarters. Jack Erselius hit a 3 with about 20 seconds left to tie the game at 39.

We had an opportunity to win it with about 2 seconds left in the 4th but the ball was tipped and time expired.

Max was big tonight. He did a great job with his shot selection and was able to drive the ball or kick it to a teammate.

Jack hit two big 3’s in the first half but none was bigger than his shot at the end of the game. He also did a great job on defense and attacking the rim when they adjusted to him.

Garrett Watts drove the ball really well. He finished well with both hands at the rim as well as made some really good passes down low but also kicking out. He was really big on the boards too and it was a big blow when we lost him to fouls late in the 4th.

Tod Gieger held his own inside and did a great job from the FT line late going 4-6 in the second half.

Houston Did a great job moving the ball and hitting the open shot. Cruz De Jong continues to improve driving with the ball and attacking the rim.

Carter Michalek came up big late in the game. When Garrett fouled out he did most of the ballhandling and did a great job creating good opportunities for his teammates.

his was a great game for the boys. While they did not come out on top, they did show a lot of grit and determination to get back in the game and handled adversity well.

The loss drops the A team’s record to 4-6 on the year.
