Boys get a win in a multi-school meet

By John Beck
Boys Track Coach

The boys had a great night competing at the Belle Plaine Invitational on Thursday, March 28, and their hard work paid off with a team win in Class B.

In the throws, Briar Simpson and Beau Young both competed well. In the shot put both had season-bests and we had a nice start to the season with the discus.

In the jumps, it was good to see Damien Knox jump a season-best in the long jump and Garrett Watts jump a pesonal record-best 6′ in the high jump.

Our two freshmen, Evan Haughey (LJ) and Easton Hudnut (HJ), are doing a good job of working on their technique and I am seeing improvements daily!

On the track we started out the day with a nice win in the sprint medley. Our handoffs were pretty good in that relay.

Our 3,200 guys went out and had a nice start to the season after that with Jayden Ross setting a good mark to start the year and Cael Cheney settling into a good rhythm. I am looking to see them build off those performances.

In the 4×800 the guys managed to cut 6 seconds as a team. I was really pleased with how those guys competed.

Kenny Criswell was able to come away with the win in the 100. He really ran well all night long! Jack Erselius was also able to place in that. Alex Black also turned in a great time with a PR for him!

The shuttle crew turned in a very solid performance to start the year. The same crew that was close to making the state meet last year picked up right where they left off coming within a half-second of their PR time.

Our distance med crew did a nice job of competing and I saw some good times out of our young freshmen there.

In the 400, Luke Erselius and Kohen Holland were both able to place helping us in the team points. Both Erselius and Holland turned in PR times there.

The 4×200 ran really well and came away with the win. They were pretty close to their best time from last year and I think they will get faster and the handoffs will get better as the season moves on.

In the 110 highs, both Garrett Watts and Damien Knox started the season off really well. Watts ran close to his PR state qualifying time and Knox ran a PR.

Our 800 guys competed well with Rett Pargeon, Ross, and Owen Desrochers turning in some solid times.

In the 200, Alex Black turned in a PR performance and Haughey had a good baseline to start his career.

We were able to go 1-2 in the 400 lows with Luke Brennan and Bryson Stockman turning in some solid times to start the year.

We had two freshmen. Linkyn Bru and Cael Cheney, run the 1,600 for us and both competed well. I saw some nice things about how they attacked the race and both will improve as the season moves along.

In the 4×100 we had the same crew that ran in the 4×200 and they capped off the night with another win. It was good to see them go out there and show what they are capable of. Details are going to be key for this crew to continue to drop time. Handoffs and running through the zone will be key for them to build off that time.

Our throwers 4×100 crew turned in a second-place finish. It is really one of the highlights of the night to see those men compete in that.

Our 4×400 crew competed well to end the night and the meet win.

Overall, the guys came out and competed tonight and were able to set up some good times to start the season.

I love what I am seeing beyond the track with these men as well. We have seniors helping freshmen at practice with techniques. We have young guys pushing the older guys in thier various workouts. Just some very good things occurring.

We have two meets next week and I am excited to get back out there and see the guys in action!
